Analysis of a foreign language feature. 'The Skin I Live In' and 'Man Bites Dog'

The skin I live in.


Point: We are looking at how you can denote the genre of a film without the dialogue.

What do we see?


  • The man with tattoos on his face is watching a woman through a screen. - creepy and surveillance.
  • Low key lighting is used. - dark at mysterious atmosphere is created.
  • The woman is looking at a camera, she looks scared. - possibly kidnapped / fighting for her life.
  • Distorted body types, writing on a body.  - medical procedures.
  • Man in a suit walks through somewhere that has a lot of trees and finds a woman on the floor.
  • He uses a hose on a man who is chained up. - violence and unwanted procedures.
  • Man looking at cells through a microscope. - symbolic of medical procedures, possibly futuristic technology.
  • Women in a nude bodysuit tries to escape but someone outside is attempting to stop her.
  • Girl hiding under a bed. - scared / kidnapped 
  • There is presence of guns. - violence and this prop indicates action and crime.
  • Red, black, and white colour palette. - symbolic of dark content possibly a thriller.
